New Year Resolution

Last year was a year filled with ups and downs, but in all this, I'm grateful for the gift of this Medium page. I am grateful that I could meet a lot of beautiful people and that I was able to write a lot. It was my resolution for the year: write a lot. And I did just that. I fell in love, got my heart broken, met new people and lost amazing ones. But if there is anything last year taught me, it's that change is the only constant thing. Nothing lasts forever, and this is not necessarily a bad thing.

There’s an African adage that says: “the person who holds a goat on the floor will be on the floor.” If someone offends you and you hold the person in mind, it would make it difficult for beautiful things to happen in your life. If anything happened in 2023 and you’re still holding it in mind, you would be stagnant. Literally. So every day for the past one month, I recite the serenity prayer: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I can’t change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.”

In group therapy, our psychologist explained to us that acceptance makes our lives easier, and I have cultivated the habit of believing that everything happens for a reason. In the past one month, I’ve become more open-minded, positive, and optimistic. This has made me less susceptible to depressive episodes—this doesn’t mean I’m no longer dealing with depression. It just means I have a different mindset, and this allows the medications and therapy to work faster. It also means that I can be a better friend, daughter, and employee, making my year a much better year than last year.

In 2024, if you want to make the most out of your life, you have to change tactics—change your mindset. Doing the same thing over and over again will give you the same results. It's time to shake things up a little. Also, remember that you are only limited by your mind: you can be whoever you want to be. Anything is possible.

Happy New Year.
